  4. Mobile computing ­– Emergency services personnel have used the service with its laptop stations for years because of its ability to instantly change records and information. It enables quick access to important information such as criminal records in the police service, along with medical history for paramedics and firefighters. Real-time uploads of newly added information and changes occur on these records, rather than having the information stored on individual computers and backed up later.
  5. Back-up Networks ­– A number of enterprises need to rely on their network not going down. Using cellular modems as a back-up network ensures that, should the wired network go down, there is wireless redundancy and alternatives to cover the need for continued connections.

What to Watch For as M2M Develops:

  1. Digital Signage – A new means of advertising as the technology develops. Real-time updates and location-based information can be updated from a central, remote location. With these abilities, there are targeted advertisement options and information displays at various locations. Advertisers are able to display different messaging based on time of day, day of week etc.
  2. Building Management – There are vast advantages to M2M in building management, including monitoring increasingly automated buildings and its energy management, security, equipment and controls. Other benefits? Analytics abilities for pinpointing issues within a building and, in some cases addressing them remotely, and central control, which protects data in a central command centre.
  3. Smart Grid Technology – These systems are helping energy and utility companies meet the demands of the consumer and the concern over climate change, increasing prices, and the need for sustainable energy sources. Homeowners are able to manage their consumption with real-time consumption visibility and billing data. The companies also benefit from better operational efficiency, resulting in fewer service calls and reducing labour costs.
